Marking the end of their Middle School journey, Bay Ridge Prep’s eighth grade students were recognized during the school’s 27th Annual Commencement, held June 5, 2025, at the Theater at City Tech in Brooklyn. The ceremony, which took place prior to the senior class graduation ceremony, honored the accomplishments of this year’s eighth graders as they transition into high school. The Middle School graduation continued a Bay Ridge Prep tradition that recognizes each student individually with remarks from faculty members.

In his opening remarks, Head of School Dr. Charles Fasano urged the students, families, and faculty members present to “take in the moment” and said the emotion he likes to focus on is gratitude.

“Gratitude for what these students are becoming,” he said, “gratitude for everything they’ve accomplished, and gratitude for all the families and teachers who have come together to help today happen.”

In her welcome address, Middle School Director Dr. Julie Mayring reflected on the unique journey of adolescence and the importance of values, connection, and trust. Drawing inspiration from global parenting philosophies and personal stories from the students’ recent Philadelphia trip, Dr. Mayring highlighted the invisible but vital role that teachers and community members play in supporting students through pivotal years of growth.

“Middle school is when students begin to chart their own path,” Dr. Mayring said. “At Bay Ridge Prep, we guide them with care, community, and a foundation built on being safe, respectful, responsible, and kind. Our graduates are ready to move forward, equipped not just with knowledge, but with strong values and a sense of belonging.”

Five student speakers – Dakota Smith, Callum Osborne, Abigail Moskalenko, Eva Petroff, and Lily Slotnick – shared heartfelt reflections about their time in middle school.

Dakota Smith shared what it meant to start over, drawing parallels between joining Bay Ridge Prep in 7th grade and the transition to high school ahead. “We may not know what to expect,” Dakota said, “but if there’s one thing Bay Ridge Prep has taught us—it’s that we’re ready.”

Eva Petroff reminded classmates that “the memories that stay with us are often the small, ordinary moments with people we care about,” emphasizing how the strength of the school’s community shaped her experience.

Abigail Moskalenko reflected on the friendships, faculty support, and athletic achievements that defined her time at Bay Ridge Prep. “From saying ‘what’s up algebros?’ to breaking a school relay record, every moment here has been unforgettable,” she said.

Callum Osborne highlighted the school’s culture of inclusion and teamwork, celebrating an undefeated Middle School Soccer season and the sense of pride that comes from achieving something together. “Whether it was on the field or in the classroom, we learned to lift each other up,” he said.

Lily Slotnick spoke about the lasting connections she built over the last nine years. “Whether you’re counting down the seconds until graduation ends or holding on as tightly as you can to the last few minutes of middle school,” Lily said, “look around at all the connections we’ve made. This place is—and always will be—a part of us.”

Prior to the ceremony, students shared favorite memories—from school plays and the annual Tiger Trot to park outings, field trips, and spontaneous hallway moments that became lifelong friendships. When asked what Bay Ridge Prep means to them, students described the school as a second home, a place that values individuality, encourages growth, and brings out the best in each of them.

They also shared their excitement for the next chapter: the independence of high school, new subjects and clubs, varsity athletics, and the chance to grow in new directions while staying connected to a community that shaped them.
