Middle School Director Featured on The Opportunity Gap Podcast

Bay Ridge Prep Middle School Director and psychologist Dr. Julie Mayring was recently featured as a guest on The Opportunity Gap with Julian Saavedra, a national podcast produced by Understood.org that explores issues impacting students’ learning, well-being, and development.

In the episode, Dr. Mayring joined host Julian Saavedra—an assistant principal and veteran educator—to discuss school phone policies and their impact on student focus, mental health, relationships, and school culture.

As many schools and state legislatures across the country move to restrict or ban student phone use, Dr. Mayring brought a long-standing perspective to the conversation as Bay Ridge Prep Middle School has been phone-free since 2016, many years before device policies became a national trend.

Dr. Mayring shared how the Middle School’s early decision was grounded in research, classroom experience, and adolescent development. Now in its ninth year, the policy is fully embedded in the culture of the school and continues to support students’ academic engagement and social-emotional well-being.

During the conversation, Dr. Mayring also addressed common questions families raise about phone-free schools, including safety, accessibility, and communication. She emphasized that Bay Ridge Prep prioritizes clear adult-to-family communication, appropriate accommodations for students who need assistive technology or medical access, and the importance of students being fully present during the school day.
