Bay Ridge Prep Class of 2026 Celebrates Community and New Beginnings

Surrounded by family, friends, faculty, staff, alumni, and classmates, the Class of 2026 crossed the commencement stage on Monday, June 8, to celebrate the friendships, growth, and experiences that defined their time at Bay Ridge Prep.

In his commencement address, Head of School Dr. Charles Fasano reflected on the unique qualities that defined the Class of 2026, highlighting their work ethic, creativity, leadership, kindness, and sense of humor.

“This is a class that has a strong work ethic and they are self-motivated,” said Dr. Fasano. “This is a deeply creative class. They are leaders, role models, and community-minded students. And perhaps most importantly, they are kind.”

Dr. Fasano also emphasized the growing importance of human-centered skills in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. Referencing data from the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report, he noted that qualities such as resilience, leadership, creativity, empathy, and analytical thinking remain among the most sought-after attributes in the workforce.

“Class of 2026, look at the craft you’ve already started building here: your creativity, your work ethic, and your kindness,” he said. “Take that craft, step out into the world, find a need that moves you, and give your future its propulsion.”

Throughout the ceremony, speakers reflected on the strong sense of community that has defined their Bay Ridge Prep experience. Upper School student speaker Graham Ford spoke about the willingness of his classmates to embrace challenges and opportunities.

“When an opportunity appears, we step up,” Ford said. “My hope for this class is that we don’t forget that it is our commitment, drive, and willingness to accept challenges that makes this class special.”

Bridget Beider encouraged her classmates to approach the future with curiosity rather than certainty, reminding graduates that while the future may be unpredictable, it is also full of possibility. Reflecting on the role of art, observation, and creativity in shaping one’s perspective, she urged her classmates to embrace uncertainty and remain open to new experiences.

“Certainty is a dead end, but curiosity is an infinite loop,” she said. “Curiosity helps us tolerate unpredictability. It’s less about chasing answers and more about learning to experience life deeply.”

Lucas Yam reflected on the importance of living in the present moment and appreciating the experiences that often become our most cherished memories.

“Life has a habit of becoming the good old days before you even realize you’re living them,” Yam told his classmates.

Harry Novatt shared his personal growth journey during his four years at Bay Ridge Prep and challenged graduates to pursue opportunities fearlessly while helping those around them succeed.

“Don’t limit yourself,” Novatt said. “Just go after it.”

For Noah Allbrooks, one of Bay Ridge Prep’s five “Lifers” who attended the school from Kindergarten through 12th grade, graduation represented both a farewell and a beginning.

“This goodbye is not the end, but the beginning of the rest of our lives,” he said.

William DeFreitas reflected on spending nearly his entire academic life at Bay Ridge Prep and expressed gratitude for the community that helped shape him.

“The hardest part about leaving has been finding somewhere like Bay Ridge Prep,” he said. “Somewhere small where everyone is supportive and cares for everyone.”

Sophia Saadi closed the student speeches with a reminder that would resonate throughout the ceremony: “Be where your feet are.”

“Don’t let the future steal the present from you,” she told her classmates. “Let’s appreciate the people around us while we still can.”

Upper School Directors Dr. Chris Nuesell and Dr. John Kugler noted that one theme repeatedly emerged from senior reflections and surveys: community.

“When asked what they will miss most about Bay Ridge Prep, students spoke about their friends, teammates, teachers, coaches, and the feeling that everyone knew and supported one another,” said Dr. Kugler. “They described Bay Ridge Prep as a family, a second home, and a place where people genuinely want to see you succeed.”

The ceremony also featured a musical performance of “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess by student musicians Delia Freeman, Nate Rosenfeld, and Aitan Winter, accompanied by Mr. Daniel Greene and Mr. Alan Bernstein. Continuing a beloved Bay Ridge Prep tradition, Humanities Department Chair Dr. Adam Wolfsdorf performed an original song written specifically for the Class of 2026, celebrating the students’ experiences, friendships, and accomplishments during their Upper School years.

Bay Ridge Prep Forever

As the ceremony concluded, a slideshow featuring photographs and memories from the students’ years at Bay Ridge Prep played on screen. Yet perhaps the most memorable moment came after the final diploma had been awarded and and after tassels were turned and caps were tossed.

While the exit music played and families prepared to celebrate, the entire Class of 2026 remained together on stage—hugging, laughing, taking photos, and savoring every final moment together. It was a fitting reflection of the theme that had echoed throughout the day: community.
