Varsity Boys Soccer Tigers Are ISAL Champs!
For the first time in school history, the Bay Ridge Prep Varsity Boys Soccer Tigers are ISAL Champions. The unprecedented achievement came after a 2-1 win over York Prep on October 26 during the Independent School Athletic League’s championship game in Red Hook.
The Tigers took an early lead before the end of the first half with a goal scored by Joshua Avila ’26 off an assist from Alex Foroohar ’24. York got on the board with one goal in the second half but that would be the only goal Bay Ridge Prep gave up thanks to a mighty defense that has been a cornerstone of the team’s success all season. In the championship game, incredible saves by goalie Julian Whitney ’26 paved the way for the Tigers to confidently open up their style of play.
Gabe DeJesus ’24 was behind two of the biggest moments of the game – stepping in as goalie to save a penalty kick from York and then scoring the game-winning goal on a free kick that sailed over the heads of York’s defenders and into the net with just minutes left to play.
“We grew from a rough season in 10th grade, to making the semi -finals last year, to winning the chip this year,” De Jesus said. “It’s been great to be part of school history.”
Athletics Director and Varsity Boys Soccer Coach Mike Petri noted that captains Alex Foroohar ’24, Cy Golanski ’24, Damian Mavromatis ’24 and Caleb Zell-Ratner ’24 displayed “true leadership” and brought out the best in the people around them.
Mavromatis noted the progression he and his teammates experienced over the years and this season in particular.
“I’m really proud of everyone and their work and development as a team,” he said. “Every single one of my teammates displayed passion and grit from the first practice of the season right up to the moment we brought home the championship.”
Foroohar said that in addition to his peers on the soccer team, many others in the community contributed to the successful season.
“All the support from our friends, family and teachers along the way meant so much to us,” he said while reflecting on the championship season. “I hope this legacy continues with future Bay Ridge Prep soccer teams. Job’s not finished.”

Coach Petri also acknowledged the collective effort of every player all season long that brought them to a victory in the championship game plus the efforts of the rest of the Bay Ridge Prep community.
“Each player had their own unique path to become part of our group and yet so important to our collective identity,” he said. “Over the course of the past few months that we’ve been on this journey together, each soccer student-athlete has added tremendous value. As I say at practice, there is strength in numbers and we couldn’t have done it without each player.”
He added, “we are fortunate to be able to stand on the shoulders of our soccer alumni who once wore the Tigers jersey, our families, friends, teachers, and so many other people who came to watch and sent messages of support. Our entire school community is so proud of this group. They hustled and competed at every opportunity. They went full tilt for 80 minutes and found strength in each other when they needed it most. Overall, it was an inspiring performance and truly fun to watch.”
