Bay Ridge Prep proudly celebrated the Class of 2025 at its 27th Annual Commencement on Thursday, June 5, at the Theater at City Tech in Downtown Brooklyn. Fifty-one graduates were honored during a moving ceremony that highlighted their academic and extra-curricular achievements, personal growth, and lasting impact on the school community.

In their joint welcome remarks, Upper School Directors Dr. John Kugler and Dr. Chris Nuesell reflected on the individuality and spirit of the Class of 2025.

“This class holds a special place in school history as the inaugural senior class at our Shore Road Building,” said Dr. Nuesell. “They entered high school just as we began our new roles leading the Upper School. We have grown alongside them as they left their mark on the school and on us.”

Dr. Kugler noted that students remembered their time at Bay Ridge Prep through vivid moments: “From championship runs and standout performances to the senior prom and our peer leadership retreat to Shelter Island, students built lasting memories. But when asked what they will miss most, the overwhelming response was simple: their friends and the teachers.”

Head of School Charles Fasano praised the Class of 2025 for its sense of community and leadership across all divisions.

“Many students in this class served as ambassadors during open houses and school tours, representing Bay Ridge Prep with thoughtfulness and enthusiasm, he said. “Others volunteered at Lower School sports clinics, sharing their athletic skills with younger students, or helped in classrooms. They gave back in ways big and small – and it mattered.”

He shared a powerful image from the final day of classes, when the seniors gathered in The Commons for a celebratory countdown to their last bell.

“You could see their influence across the whole community. On the last day of senior classes, they gathered in The Commons and counted down to their final bell,” Dr. Fasano continued. “Students from other grades stopped to watch. Many were visibly emotional – because they had grown attached to this group, and they knew something special was coming to an end.”

The ceremony featured heartfelt speeches from members of the graduating class, many of whom shared personal reflections on their growth, challenges, and the sense of community they found at Bay Ridge Prep.

Thea Harasani spoke of how the seemingly small moments—a smile, a check-in, a hallway conversation—formed the foundation of lasting friendships and personal transformation.

“Together, we built something… a version of ourselves we didn’t even realize was forming,” she said.

CJ Fletcher shared his thoughts on his quiet but powerful journey through high school, emphasizing the importance of learning from every class and every teacher. Speaking of the teachers he said that they “allowed me to learn and grow in many ways; they have been a major part of my success. I appreciate the teachers at this school so much.”

Margaux Mayward credited her success to the support and accessibility of her teachers. “No matter how big or small the task, my teachers would simply say, ‘How can I help?’ That environment built a confidence I never could’ve achieved on my own.”

Olivia Kern credited her transformation to the encouragement she received from faculty and peers. She shared how teachers fostered curiosity and confidence, noting moments when “what I had to say mattered.”

Gabriella Petroff added to the student speeches with a poetic reminder that commencement is not an ending, but a beginning.

“We are not standing at the end of a road,” she said. “We are standing at the start of something new… Begin with trembling hands. Begin as a whisper or a wildfire. But begin.”

Summer Murjani, a Charter Club Award recipient who attended Bay Ridge Prep from Kindergarten through 12th grade, brought a sense of nostalgia to the stage.

“We grew into this place, and it grew into us,” she reflected, capturing the unique experience of growing up within one school community.

Frankie Calacanis, also a Charter Club Award recipient, brought humor and perspective to the stage, acknowledging the uniqueness of his class and their many “firsts,” from launching new programs to being the first senior class in the new Shore Road Building. He closed by paraphrasing meaningful words that Athletic Director Mike Petri often tells student-athletes about the Tiger shield that appears on their sports uniforms.

“As Mike Petri says, no matter what you’re wearing or doing, you will always have the Tiger on your chest,” Calacanis said, “and I’d like for you all to carry that with you no matter where you end up, because you never know who you might run into later in life and how much the name Bay Ridge Prep means to them.”

Bay Ridge Prep also honored students for graduating with academic excellence:

Cum Laude (With Honors):
Laurenne Berha, Chandra Kyrwood, Summer Murjani, Samantha Norman, and Abigail Ryvkin

Magna Cum Laude (With High Honors):
Thea Harasani, Olivia Kern, and Mariana Thomas

Summa Cum Laude (With Highest Honors):
Bailey Bartnik, CJ Fletcher, Margaux Mayward, and Nico Bermudez

In keeping with recent tradition, each graduate was presented with a diploma by Dr. Fasano while a short note—composed of reflections from faculty and staff—was read aloud, capturing the unique spirit and contributions of each student. After a heartfelt slideshow of Class of 2025 memories, the seniors returned to the stage one final time as a group. Dr. Fasano then led them in the ceremonial turning of the tassels from right to left before officially declaring them high school graduates and the newest alums of Bay Ridge Prep.
