From Buddies to Leaders: Bay Ridge Prep Celebrates Eighth Grade Class

Bay Ridge Prep’s 8th graders marked a major milestone on Monday, June 8, as 29 students gathered with family, friends, faculty, and staff at the New York City College of Technology Theater in Brooklyn to celebrate the completion of middle school and the beginning of their next chapter as high school students.

Head of School Dr. Charles Fasano opened the ceremony by reflecting on the significance of graduation as a moment to pause, appreciate accomplishments, and recognize the people who helped make those achievements possible.

Speaking about the graduates, Dr. Fasano highlighted a quality that has come to define this class: their ability to balance hard work with joy.

“As I was watching this group interact during our recent Pennsylvania trip, I was reflecting on how this group gets the balance right,” he said. “They know how to work hard, they are intellectually curious, they have strong engagement in class, and they make each other better. But they also know how to have fun and they bring laughter and joy to our school building every day.”

He pointed to the class’s recent performance of a Shakespearean tragedy transformed into a fast-paced comedy as an example of the creativity, energy, and humor they brought to the Bay Ridge Prep community. He also recognized the leadership of several graduates on the Middle School baseball team, which completed an undefeated season.

Middle School Director Dr. Julie Mayring spoke about resilience, growth, and the importance of learning to embrace challenges. Drawing from a speech by Duke University women’s basketball coach Kara Lawson, she reminded students that success is not about waiting for life to become easier.

“It never gets easier,” she said. “What happens is you become someone who handles hard stuff better.”

Reflecting on responses she collected from the graduating class, Dr. Mayring noted that students spoke openly about academic challenges, social hurdles, and the demands of middle school. Yet their reflections consistently pointed to the same conclusion: growth happens through community.

“They arrived looking for a place to belong, found it in each other, and are leaving with the bravery required to face a much larger high school world,” she said.

The ceremony featured remarks from student speakers Harry Pally, Eva Gambale, Niall Sicotte, and Ava Bevilacqua, each reflecting on the experiences, friendships, and lessons that shaped their years at Bay Ridge Prep.

Harry Pally reflected on nearly a decade at Bay Ridge Prep and the many changes his class experienced together. From navigating remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic to welcoming new classmates and building new friendships, he spoke about the importance of adaptability and perseverance. Looking back on traditions such as the Buddy Program, Harry reflected on how one generation of students helps guide the next.

“The biggest thing we have learned at Bay Ridge Prep is how to adapt,” he said. “During times of change, you have to adapt, have a good mindset, and remember that you have others to rely on.”

Eva Gambale focused on the sense of belonging that has defined her nine years at Bay Ridge Prep. She reflected on the school’s close-knit community, where meaningful conversations, friendships, and shared experiences create lasting memories. Looking back on her own experience as both a buddy and now an older student serving as a role model to younger children, Eva encouraged her classmates to appreciate the present moment and cherish the community that helped shape them.

“As we take a step forward into our futures, we will always have this little school that we grew up in,” she said. “In four short years we will look back at this moment thinking about how young we were as eighth graders. Take the time to pause, look around, and feel every moment.”

Niall Sicotte spoke about the transition to high school and the confidence Bay Ridge Prep has given students to embrace new opportunities and challenges. He reflected on how increasing independence, self-advocacy, and responsibility throughout middle school helped prepare him for the next chapter.

“I am not anticipating an easy transition into high school,” he said. “But Bay Ridge Prep has given me the mindset and knowledge necessary to handle change and move forward.”

Using a collection of hats as props, Ava Bevilacqua delivered a heartfelt and humorous reflection on the many roles, experiences, and memories that shaped her years at Bay Ridge Prep. From baseball and theater to Spanish class and the lasting influence of teachers and classmates, Ava used each hat to symbolize a different part of her journey and the many ways students grow during their time at the school.

“We have all come so far from whenever our journeys started here at Bay Ridge Prep,” she said. “Every interaction and every experience shaped us in some way. You’ve helped me gain confidence, made me feel smart and funny, and shown me that I belong here with all of you.”

A special moment during the ceremony recognized eight students who have been members of the Bay Ridge Prep community since Kindergarten, completing a remarkable nine-year journey together.

Throughout the ceremony, faculty members shared personalized tributes to each graduate, highlighting their unique strengths, accomplishments, and contributions to the school community. Together, the reflections painted a picture of a class known for its resilience, curiosity, kindness, humor, and willingness to support one another.

As graduates crossed the stage to receive their diplomas, they celebrated not only the completion of middle school, but also the friendships, memories, and experiences that have defined their time at Bay Ridge Prep.

In September, many of these graduates will return to Bay Ridge Prep as members of the Upper School, continuing their journey together as the Class of 2030. While their Middle School chapter has come to a close, the qualities that defined this class, including their adaptability, sense of community, intellectual curiosity, and ability to find joy in every experience, will continue to guide them as they take on the opportunities and challenges ahead.
