‘Letters to Sala’ Cast Meets Playwright

On October 17, the Upper School cast of “Letters to Sala” met with playwright Arlene Hutton and author Ann Kirschner whose mother, Sala Garncarz, survived five years as a teenage girl in Nazi labor camps during WWII. Sala risked her life to save over 350 letters, cards and photographs from family and friends, which are now housed at the New York Public Library in the Dorot Jewish Division.

Ann Kirschner’s book, “Sala’s Gift,” chronicles her mother’s experience and these letters and provided the basis for the play we are performing in a few weeks. The cast also visited the library to see these primary documents first hand during a private viewing of the collection that librarians prepared specially for us. Letters and photographs from many of the people being portrayed in the play were on display alongside their English translations.

In addition, resource materials about the town in Poland that Sala was from, the Auschwitz concentration camp where her parents and many members of her village perished, as well as period reading materials for children in Yiddish and Polish.

Upper School theater students will stage “Letters to Sala” on November 30 and December 1.
