Red Ribbon, Blue Skies, and a Brand New School Building

Tuesday, September 3, marked a historical occasion for Bay Ridge Prep: after years of dreaming, planning, and building, our school officially opened the doors of its very own Upper School building at 7509 Shore Road, overlooking the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and the sparkling sunlit waters of the New York Bay.

Faculty members, donors, trustees, parents, students, and local officials gathered at a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of this monumental project – Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, State Senator Andrew Gounardes and Councilman Justin Brannan were in attendance and spoke high praise of Bay Ridge Prep’s incredible progress.

“The reason that everyone wants to live in Bay Ridge is because of schools like Bay Ridge Prep,” Councilman Brannan declared.

Sen. Gounardes remarked in amazement that he “never thought a project like this would happen so fast,” adding that Bay Ridge Prep “finally has a home that befits its reputation” and will “continue to inspire generations towards excellence.”

Acknowledging that Bay Ridge Prep students come from all over Brooklyn as well as other boroughs of New York City, Brooklyn Borough President Reynoso announced that, like the great rap artist Notorious BIG once said, “We’re going to spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way,” followed by proclaiming that we are adopting all Bay Ridge Prep students into “the great borough of Brooklyn…the best borough of them all!”

Reynoso also described his personal experience of attending a private school, and the role it played in transforming students like himself into “good people” and strong citizens of the community.

Head of School, Charles Fasano, also shared Bay Ridge Prep’s unofficial two-word, student-coined slogan: “Kids First,” before reflecting on the school’s humble beginnings 26 years ago.

Bay Ridge Prep started as a one room schoolhouse at 78th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues. As the “Little School That Could,” slowly gained momentum and increased in popularity, it expanded to a larger building at 8101 Ridge Boulevard in 2000. Just four years later, the Upper School outgrew this location and needed a home of its own and, for the next 20 years, lived in 7420 Fourth Avenue, a sentimental and cozy facility that will always be fondly remembered by faculty, students and alums.

Now, in its 27th academic year, Bay Ridge Prep is proud to finally unveil a newly renovated, modern, state of the art facility that will be an integral part of the Bay Ridge community. “It’s so beautiful!,” has been a common refrain, as people walk through the bright blue and white hallways for the first time. And soon, just next door to the main building, a brand new gymnasium will rise during the 2025-2026 school year.

To complement Bay Ridge Prep’s new Upper School building, improvements have also been made a few blocks away at its Lower and Middle School building at 8101 Ridge Boulevard. Younger students will be welcomed with a fresh coat of paint on the walls, refurbished single stall, private restrooms, and on the way soon is brand new furniture for common areas. The entire sub basement of the building has also been remodeled to offer much needed storage space for supplies, freeing up other spaces within the building. A bold new Bay Ridge Prep sign has been added to the 81st Street front lawn, a symbol of the ever growing pride in our school.

With the ribbon officially cut at Shore Road, and the building open, Bay Ridge Prep students of today and generations to come have the gift of a bright new Brooklyn home.
