The Bay Ridge Prep Varsity Softball Tigers are once again the undefeated ISAL Champions after a 6-3 win over Dwight on May 11 at Maimonides Park in Coney Island. This is the fourth time in school history the softball squad has brought home the league title, the third time they have seen an undefeated season and the second year in a row they are undefeated champions.

The Tigers scored a first inning run, but Dwight soon got on the board and started the third inning with a 2-1 lead. Bay Ridge Prep, however, bounced back and went into the fourth inning with a 3-2 lead that extended to 6-2 heading into the final inning before celebrating their 6-3 victory on the same field the Brooklyn Cyclones call home.

This year’s softball team included Jada Andino ‘25, Bailey Bartnik ‘25, Rafaella Bevilacqua ‘27, Sienna Cruz ‘23, Cecilia Freedman ‘26, Thea Harasani ‘25, Nina Hewryk ‘26, Cara Insley ‘24, Kate Lynch ‘23, Ava MacDonald ‘25, Samantha Norman ‘25, Samantha Profis ‘25, Selina Psarras ‘26, Abigail Ryvkin ‘25, Victoria Tsepelman ‘25 and Cecily Veto ‘26. Gabriel Brathwaite ‘26 served as team manager.

Several members of last year’s team graduated in 2022 and, according to coaches Ember Chabot, Gina Marshall and Deb Brown, that meant this year’s team was built around a roster of five returning players that welcomed 11 new teammates, many of whom were new to the sport.

“Coming off a winning season, it can sometimes happen that a team expects to coast,” the coaches said in a statement. “Things felt a little up in the air for this team before the season began, but at no point did our returners rest on their laurels. They showed up and put in the work helping their 11 new teammates learn the game.”

The coaches added that, for a team stacked with rookies, chemistry was found surprisingly fast.

“With dedicated student leadership and an amazing sense of community, our team fell into step after our first scrimmage,” the coaches said. “ We couldn’t be more proud of this squad and their continued success and we look forward to continued growth next season.”

The Tigers last brought home varsity softball championships in 2016, 2017 and 2022. A new banner will be added to the school’s gyms this fall to acknowledge the 2023 softball champs and the 2023 Softball Tigers will be honored at the next Upper School Town Hall.
