Varsity Boys Tennis Sweeps Championship Tournament


The Bay Ridge Prep Varsity Boys Tennis Tigers made history on May 8 while playing in their first ever ISAL tournament and sweeping the board! Winning first place in each of the five categories to take home some hardware, the champions include three 9th Graders, indicating that the tennis program has a strong foundation to continue to build on their success in the future. 


The ISAL Champions include:


Noah Vinbaytel ’27: 1st place for 1st Singles

Sami Badre-Hume ’25: 1st place for 2nd Singles 

Lenny Huang ’27 1st place for 3rd Singles 

Michael Nigri ‘24 & Alex Foroohar ’24: 1st place for 1st Doubles

Joseph Mazza-Chimene ’27 & Leo Sturm ’25: 1st place for 2nd Doubles 


In their final match for Bay Ridge Prep, seniors Alex Foroohar and Micheal Nigri sealed the sweep for the Tigers by winning a highly contested 10 point tiebreaker against the BWL Lions. Under immense pressure, Nigri hit a solid shot down the line and BWL hit the volley into the net. 


Tennis coaches Ms. Guadalupe Delgado and Mr. John Allbrooks said this is has been a truly exceptional season for the Tigers with every member of the team having the opportunity to complete and secure victories throughout the season.


“As we approached the ISAL Tournament, each player carried with them the confidence gained from their individual successes,” the coaches said in a statement. ”The unwavering positive spirit among all team members was evident, as they supported each other both on and off the court.”

They added that during the championship tournament, each player navigated through three rounds of intense competition in pursuit of the championship title. 


“With each match won and every advancement made, the collective spirit of the team soared,” the coaches continued. “In the championship rounds, each team member faced their toughest challenges yet, demonstrating their resilience and determination.“


This year’s boys tennis roster featured Sami Badre-Hume, Gabriel De Jesus, Odin Ferguson, Alexander Foroohar, Lenny Huang, Joseph Mazza-Chimene, Michael Nigri, Arlo Reynolds, Alexander Rimalovski, Leo Stone Weiss, Leo Sturm, Noah Vinbaytel and Aiden Wong.


The Tigers last brought home tennis championships when Delilah Friedman ‘21 won the NYSAIS State Championship title for Girls Singles Tennis in 2019 just a year after her brother, Dylan Friedman ’18 won the NYSAIS State Championship title for Boys Singles Tennis.
