Suzuki Violin Parent Night Teaches Families About Music Education

Bay Ridge Prep values its partnerships with families and endeavors to work together with adults at home to help children reach their potential in all areas – including music. In that spirit, parents in Grades K-2 enjoyed each other’s company recently as they learned more about the school’s new violin program, how to care for the violin, and to take a short lesson with violin teacher Corinne Bennett.

The evening began with introductions and sharing about our musical backgrounds and interests. Families discussed the Suzuki method and how parents can support their children at home on this musical journey. Like all good musicians, attendees ended the evening by practicing what was just discussed. The parent ensemble unpacked their violins, took their first bows, and learned how to play a song together!

The Suzuki method emphasizes that every child can learn to play an instrument and talent can be developed when children are placed in the right environment. Corinne explained to parents that children will learn music in the way that they learn language – first by ear and later by reading. During music lessons she uses the “vocabulary” of a common repertoire to build fluency, confidence, and playing skills that will enhance their violin performance.

In school, students are happily enjoying learning to play their new instruments!
